WHAT IS MAENA AGENCY — MEANING AS THE MOST OVERLOOKED LEVER IN LUXURY BRAND STRATEGY

Theme: Introducing MAENA (1/2): A New Lens on Luxury Brand Strategy

Behind every agency is a conviction. This is mine — and why I built MAENA around it.

Over the past three weeks, I wrote about the decline of luxury codes: the standardisation of aesthetics, the overexposure of ambassadors, the conformity of commercial moments. They were the product of ten years spent inside luxury and beauty houses navigating firsthand the complex tensions between creative vision, brand identity, and commercial acceleration.

In such a saturated and competitive landscape, one question consistently surfaced across the market: why, even when brands have everything — heritage, talent, resources, cultural authority — do so many of them end up communicating the same thing?

The answer, I came to believe, is not a lack of creativity, but a lack of clarity about what they actually stand for.

That conviction is where MAENA Agency begins.

MAENA: THE WORD BEFORE THE AGENCY

MAENA stands for Meaning.

Etymologically, meaning refers to what is held in mind: an inner intention that precedes expression. Before a product exists, before a campaign launches, before a brand speaks — there is an intention. A reason. A conviction about what this brand is for, and why it should matter to the people it is designed for.

The challenge, for most brands, lies less in the concept than in the consistency of its application.

MAENA Agency emerges from the space between the invisible and the visible — between what a brand fundamentally is and what it manages to express. That gap is, in my view, where brand equity is either built or quietly lost.

WHY MEANING IS A STRATEGIC LEVER

There is a common misunderstanding in marketing strategy: that meaning is a soft concept — valuable for brand storytelling, but secondary to the harder imperatives of growth, performance, and commercial execution.

I disagree profoundly with this view.

Meaning is not decoration; it is the foundation upon which enduring desirability is built.

When a brand has genuine clarity about what it embodies — its cultural position, its emotional promise, its relationship with the world — every downstream decision becomes sharper. Product development, portfolio structuring, ambassador strategy, go-to-market direction: all of these gain precision when there is a clear brand conviction at their centre.

Conversely, when that conviction is absent or diluted, brands default to benchmarking. They watch what others do. They adopt the same codes, the same formats, the same narratives. And they arrive, gradually, at the uniformity that characterises so much of the luxury landscape today.

The brands that have built lasting desirability are rarely those that moved the fastest or spent the most. What distinguishes them, across cycles and cultural shifts, is the ability to remain deeply and unmistakably themselves.

An aesthetic achievement, certainly. But above all, a strategic one.

FROM THE INVISIBLE TO THE VISIBLE: HOW MAENA WORKS

At MAENA, we believe that every premium brand carries within it something singular — a reason for being, a creative intention, a set of values that, properly articulated, becomes a genuine competitive advantage.

Our work begins upstream — before the campaign, before the launch, before the strategy deck. It begins with the question that is rarely asked with enough rigour: what is this brand actually for?

From that core insight, we partner with founders and leadership teams to build a brand platform: a structured articulation of brand identity, positioning, and purpose that becomes the strategic anchor for all that follows. Not a mission statement. A working tool — one that gives teams the clarity to make faster, sharper, more aligned decisions at every level of the business.

Once that foundation is in place, we translate it into growth direction: how the brand positions itself in its market, how it structures its offer, how it enters new moments with creative conviction rather than commercial reflex.

WHY A BOUTIQUE MODEL DELIVERS BETTER BRAND STRATEGY

MAENA is a boutique agency — a deliberate choice.

Senior-led. Selective. Focused on upstream, high-value thinking. The boutique model reflects the same conviction as the work itself: that depth is more valuable than breadth, that genuine engagement with a brand’s strategic challenges creates more lasting results than broad multi-channel execution, and that real partnership with leadership requires close, direct, unhurried collaboration.

We work with a selective number of clients at a time — luxury and premium brands at key moments of growth, repositioning, or acceleration. Because the quality of the work demands it.

THE EXPERIENCE BEHIND THE STRATEGY

MAENA was founded by Marine Moureaux-Gall. My background sits at the intersection of analytical rigour and creative sensibility — Sciences Po Paris, SupOptique ParisTech, Harvard Business School — combined with over a decade of brand and growth leadership across beauty and luxury.

I have worked inside LVMH, Chanel, Parfums de Marly, Pierre Fabre, L’Oréal — across skincare, makeup, fragrance, and haircare — in France, the Middle East, and with strategic exposure to Asian markets.

What I carry from those years goes beyond expertise. Perspective, above all. The understanding of how brand decisions are made inside large organisations and founder-led businesses alike. Where clarity is most needed. Where strategy can get lost between intent and execution. And where a well-placed conviction, clearly articulated, can change the direction of a brand.

THE PHILOSOPHICAL SIGNATURE

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote: “One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye.”

For MAENA, this sentence functions as a strategic posture rather than an aesthetic reference. The most important things about a brand — its identity, its cultural position, its reason for being — are invisible. They exist before the product, before the campaign, before the price point. And yet they determine the quality and durability of everything that follows.

MAKING MEANING VISIBLE — AND BUILDING LASTING DESIRABILITY

Our role is to make the essential visible. To find the words, the structure, and the strategic direction that turn an inner conviction into an outer expression — and a premium product into a brand with genuine, lasting desirability.

Because in a world where luxury is losing its singularity — where brands tend to benchmark, converge, and communicate the same things in the same ways — the ability to articulate what makes you irreplaceable is not a nice-to-have.

It is the only brief that matters.

In a world of increasing uniformity, singularity becomes the most valuable luxury of all.
